The Royal Palace of Madrid is a building defined by its immense scale. With a floor area of 135,000 square meters (1,450,000 sq ft) and 3,418 rooms, it is the largest functioning royal palace in Europe, dwarfing both Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Versailles. Its construction began in 1738 on the site of the old Royal Alcázar, which burned down in 1734, and was completed in 1764 under King Charles III.
Among its thousands of rooms is the magnificent Throne Room, with a ceiling painted by the Venetian master Tiepolo, depicting "The Apotheosis of the Spanish Monarchy." The Royal Armory is considered one of the most important in the world, housing pieces from as early as the 13th century. This is not just a historic building, but a living monument to centuries of Spanish history, art, and power.
